The flag of Indonesia is known as "Song Merah Putih", which means "the red and white", and refers to the relatively simple design of a horizontal bicolor flag of red and white, with the red field situated on top.

The roots of the modern Indonesian flag can be traced back to the flag of the Majapahit Empire from the 13th-century. Red and white began to be used on the flag in connection with the aspirations for freedom from the Netherlands throughout the 20th century.

Today's Indonesian flag was adopted on Indonesia's Independence Day, on the 17th of August, 1945. Red and white were sacred colors in the 13th century. Red symbolizes the physical existence and white symbolizes the soul. The combination of the different colors represents the human as a whole.
