Facts about the flag:
The coat of arms, located in the top inner corner of the flag, shows with its heraldic elements from crusaders, that Malta was an important strategic key point during the Middle Ages.
The origin of the flag is believed to be related to the man who conquered Malta, Roger I of Sicily, in 1090. The cross was added in 1943, when George IV was rewarded for his achievements during World War II with a Saint George Cross. Back then, the cross rested on a blue background, but the blue color was removed later when Malta became an independent nation in 1964.
Their merchant flag is completely red with a white Maltese cross on it, which originates from the era when the Order of Saint John ruled the island, 1530-1798.
