Tuvalu's flag was adopted in connection with the country's independence on October 1, 1978, with the proportions 1:2.

The flag has a light blue background with the Union Jack in the top left corner and nine five-pointed stars in yellow on the right side of the flag.

The stars on the flag represent the nine islands of which Tuvalu consists. The position of the stars on the flag shows how they are placed in relation to each other.

Tuvalu received a new flag on December 3, 1976, when Tuvalu broke away from the British possessions of Gilbert and Ellice Islands. That flag consisted of the British Blue Ensign and the coat of arms of Tuvalu. This flag was replaced in 1978 by the current flag.
