The national flag of Tonga was officially adopted by parliament on November 4th, 1875, with the proportions 1:2.

The flag is red with a small white square as a centerpiece in the upper left corner. The white square also features a red Greek cross, which represents Christianity.

The white color of the flag stands for purity and the red symbolizes the blood of Christ. The first version of the flag of Tonga was introduced by King George Tupou, after converting to Christianity and declaring Tonga an independent monarchy in 1845. At that time, the flag was white with a red Greek cross.
