The flag of Taiwan is equally known as the flag of the Republic of China.

It has a red background, but displays a white sun on a blue background in the upper left corner. It is still being used as a civil and state flag, and as a naval ensign out at sea.

The white sun with the blue background was created in 1895 by Lu Hao-tung - a member of the "Revive China Society". The sun has 12 rays, symbolizing the progress since the division of a day into 12 hours. The flag was used as a sign for the Sun Yat-sen party, who led the nationalist party Kuomintang.
