The flag's red and black colors were once used by the German Empire, and reflect Papua New Guinea's history as a German colony.

They are also classic colors in the local trade. The paradise bird has been a symbol of the nation for a long time. The five white stars stand for the Southern Cross constellation, but can also refer to a well-known legend of five sisters.

First, before their independence, a tricolor was formed in blue, yellow and green, together with the constellation and the paradise bird. The proposal proved unpopular and their current flag was chosen from a competition, created by 15 year old Susan Karike. The flag was adopted on the 1st of July, 1971.
