The flag received its appearance after a competition, and was adopted, in connection with independence from Great Britain, on the 1st of October, 1960.

2870 people participated in the competition, and the winner was the engineering student, Michael Taiwo Akinkumi, from Ibadan. Yet, in his proposal, there was a sun in the white field of the flag, which was removed when it officially became the national flag.

The green color is a symbol of agriculture, the white stands for peace and unity. Nigeria's trade flag has links to the flag, which was used by Great Britain as a trade flag during the colonial era. The flag is completely red, with a miniature of Nigeria's national flag at the top towards the flag's inner corner.
