The red color is found in earlier Montenegrin flags, as well as the golden edge that has varied between gold and silver. When the country was a sub-level republic of Yugoslavia, the flag existed as a tricolor in red, white and blue - known as the pan-Slavic colors. The flag also had a red star as a symbol of socialism, still with a golden edge.

After a referendum in Montenegro, a small majority voted for independence. From June 3rd, 2006, the country became independent, and as a result of this event, the former interim flag was also adopted as a national flag. The flag had been designated as an interim flag by the government on the 12th of July, 2000.
