Red is the symbol of the freedom fight, blue symbolizes the Indian Ocean, yellow is the bright future as a result of freedom, and green represents the beauty of nature.

Mauritius became a British colony in 1810, after having been ruled by the French since 1718. The flag was designed by the British National Army College of Arms upon the independence of the country in 1968. On January 1st, the flag was adopted. It was hoisted for the first time on March 12th.

In 1992, the country became a republic of the British Commonwealth and no changes have been made to the flag ever since.
