Flag of Luxembourg
Facts, history and meaning about the flag of Luxembourg

Luxembourg is located in Europe.

The official ISO 3166 code for Luxembourg is:

lu

The colors red, white and blue are derived from the weapon of the Grand Duke Henrik IV, from the 13th century, which was a red lion with a golden crown, against blue and white stripes. The flag was used as a symbol of the French Revolution's ideals of freedom, since the 1840s.

It was officially adopted as Luxembourg's national flag on the 23rd of June, 1972. The flag differs from the flag of the Netherlands, by its slightly paler blue color and its more elongated form.

The design of the trade flag shares even more similarities with Henrik IV's weapons, as it has narrow blue and white stripes, with the red lion, which also features on Luxembourg's state weapon.
