Facts about the flag:
The current flag of Latvia is the same flag that was used between 1918 and 1940, when the country was independent. In 1940, the country became a Soviet republic, their flag was banned, and instead, they received a flag that was linked to the other Soviet flags. When Latvia became independent again, their old flag was reinstated.
There is a popular legend about the design of the flag. A seriously injured Latvian chieftain was said to have been wrapped in a white sheet, stained red by his blood. The sheet retained its white color where his body was lying. In the next battle, this sheet was used as a banner, and the warriors were invigorated with strength and pushed their enemies to retreat successfully. The flag was adopted on the 21st of December, 1990.
