The flag of Kenya was adopted on the 12th of December, 1963, with the proportions 2:3.

The flag is a tricolor comprising the colors black, red and green, with white stripes separating the fields. In the center of the flag, there is a Maasai shield of two crossed spears that is associated with Kenya's state weapon.

The black color stands for the fight for freedom of the country's independence. The red symbolizes the blood that was shed, when the country was liberated from the oppression of colonial power. The green symbolizes the land and agriculture, and the white stripes symbolize peace.

Like many other national flags of African countries, the flag of Kenya is based on the flag that was used by the dominant independence movement.
