During the 20th century, the flag of Ethiopia became a symbol of all the African countries that were, slowly but surely, liberated from colonization.

Red, yellow, green, and sometimes even black, are known as the Pan-African colors; most African countries now feature these colors in their flags. In 1895, the colors were used for the first time by Emperor Menelik II, in three separate pennants, and a flag of the three colors compounded was first hoisted on the 6th of October, 1897.

The flag was adopted on the 6th of February, 1996. Many Ethiopians do not want to recognize the current flag with the blue circle and yellow pentagram, and still use the old flag instead.

This flag is also part of the category: green yellow red flag.
