El Salvador is located in North America.

The official ISO 3166 code for El Salvador is:

sv

The flag of El Salvador was adopted on May 17, 1912.

The two blue stripes and the white stripe in the middle are based on the flag of the Federal Republic of Central America, originating in the early 19th century. Displayed in the white field is the country's coat of arms. The date when the country gained its independence is featured in the coat of arms (September 15, 1821), along with a picture of a rainbow and a Phrygian cap, associated with freedom.

There are also five volcanoes between two oceans, which are the Pacific Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean. Beneath the picture, the following words are written: "Dios Union Libertad", which roughly translates to "God, Unity, Freedom".

Between 1865 and 1912, the flag shared some similarity with the American flag, using nine stars and blue-white stripes.
