Flag of Cuba

Flag of Cuba
Facts, history and meaning about the flag of Cuba

Cuba is located in North America.

The official ISO 3166 code for Cuba is:

cu

The flag was adopted on May 20th, 1902, but has origins dating back to 1848. A Venezuelan general, named Narciso Lópes, designed the flag and used it in an attempt to free Cuba from Spanish colonial rule, an attempt that failed.

The reason behind the design of the flag could partly relate to some of the liberation movement having ties to Cuban exiles living in the United States, who were intent on turning Cuba into an American state.

The red triangle, which is a classic symbol of freemasonry, represents freedom, equality and brotherhood. The white star is a symbol of independence. The three blue stripes represent the nation's three original provinces.
